Is boat insurance required?

Boat insurance is always recommended, even if your state doesn’t require it, or if you buy your boat in cash and don’t use a boat loan. However, it is required by most marine lenders if you opt for paying for your boat with a boat loan.

What are the types of boat insurance?

The two main types of boat insurance are an agreed value policy and an actual cash value policy. The agreed value policy is based on the value of the boat when the policy is written. It’s typically the more expensive policy for upfront costs but there isn’t any depreciation for the total loss of a boat. The actual cash value policy only pays out the actual cash value of the boat at the time of the reported loss. This policy is less expensive upfront but takes depreciation into account over time.

What is not covered by insurance?

What is and is not covered will depend on the type of boat insurance policy you have. Make sure to read the fine print and have the insurance agent explain anything you’re unclear about. You don’t want to choose a policy and realize that certain things aren’t covered after you already purchase it.

What happens if you don't have boat insurance?

If you don’t have boat insurance, you may be breaking your financing contract if you have a boat loan. You may also be breaking the law in some states that require boat owners and operators to have up to date boat insurance. Additionally, you’re putting yourself at risk for litigation, and tons of headaches, and out-of-pocket expenses. You may get sued if you don’t have boat insurance, you may get a citation, and your entire boat loan may be due. It’s not worth it to take the risk. Make sure you and your boat are protected and purchase marine insurance.

How much does boat insurance cost?

Boat insurance may be as affordable as $200 to $500 per year for a small inexpensive boat and may cost tens of thousands of dollars per year for a yacht. Typically, expect to spend around 1% to 5% of the boat’s value per year as a rough estimate for boat insurance. For example, if you have a boat that is worth $100,000, expect to spend anywhere from $1,000 to $5,000 per year for a comprehensive boat insurance policy. That breaks down to about $83.33 to $416.67 per month.

What's included in a boat insurance policy?

Just like your boat may be very different from your neighbor’s boat, your policy will be as well. You want a policy that specifically covers your type of boat, its intended use, its value, and is based on the location it will be housed because boat insurance costs vary greatly even from city to city and especially from state to state. Marine insurance policies not only cover boats, but they can also cover yachts, jet skis, sailboats, dinghies, boat clubs, and boat rentals and personal watercraft rentals.

Where do I buy boat insurance?

My experience with Trident Funding was disappointing from start to finish. I applied for a boat loan but received no response until I reached out myself. They informed me I was approved, blaming technical issues for the lack of communication. After finally receiving the approval, I was presented with a long list of documents required by the lender, which seemed excessive for a $68,000 loan. Despite this, I submitted all the requested paperwork promptly.Throughout the process, my underwriter, Courtney B., continuously requested additional documents over several days. After about a week of this back-and-forth, I received an email asking if I had other sources of income, as they were encountering a “debt-to-income” issue. I immediately contacted Courtney to clarify that there must be an error in their calculations, as my financial profile did not align with this assessment. She assured me a second reviewer would assess my file and promised to provide an update by the end of the day.Several more days passed with no update. When I followed up again, I received a brief email stating that my application was denied due to the debt-to-income ratio, without any further explanation. My follow-up emails and calls went unanswered. Frustrated, I applied for a similar loan with my bank, which approved me within seconds.Overall, my experience with Trident Funding was a major waste of time. I would recommend considering alternative lenders if you’re looking for a more efficient and responsive process.

I have done two transactions using Trident Funding, Vincent and his team provide customer service unlike anything I have experienced in 30 years. I’ve dealt with a lot of excellent companies but this operation takes the stress out of luxury financing. No surprises no mistakes, no pressure. My first transaction was smooth, it was during Covid and we did the closing on the hood of a car in a parking lot wearing masks. This time the closing was remote and I asked if it was possible to move up the closing by a week to accommodate my schedule. They were happy to accommodate and I had no idea what I was asking… Vincent was on vacation, he was emailing and closely tracking my entire deal from what was supised to be his vacation, emailing daily for most of the week, Joe from Trident met me half way between our offices to hand deliver the closing docs so I didn’t have to drive all the way to their office - way above and beyond… and when it was all said and done, after it was a done deal finished closing, Vincent called me and said he was able to lower my rate because the fed has just adjusted the prime. Trident redid all the paperwork, just to pass the savings on to me. Like I said, I have not experienced Service like this anywhere, especially in finance. Long story short, go with Trident Funding and don’t let snail mail scare you! Now if you want to know why, then continue reading. Story time.My wife and I were applying for a loan to get our first ever boat, a used boat. We applied to two lenders: one being a credit union who is capable of e-sign and the other being Trident, who is not caught up with times and had to overnight FedEx our loan documents, which must be signed/notarized and overnight sent back via FedEx. We were pre-approved by both lenders with the same terms, so we anticipated on moving forward with the credit union to expedite the process by taking advantage of e-sign capabilities. On Monday, I received a follow up e-mail from Marty asking when we were looking to move forward with the paperwork. I e-mailed him back thanking him for his time, but we were moving forward with a different lender. He replied with no hard feelings and wished us the best of luck. However, that was until the credit union completely changed all the promised terms due to the age of the boat when we began to move forward (which was BS considering they knew the age of the boat when we applied, but that’s fine).I quickly called Marty explaining our situation. He told me no worries and the pre-approval was good for 30 days. More importantly, the terms were still the same. Here is where Marty went to work. I provided all paperwork on my end. Marty contacted the broker, who also went to work. The broker sent all the necessary requested paperwork. By the end of the business day, Marty overnight sent all loan documents with clear instructions via FedEx with tracking. On Tuesday, I received the documents. Marty saw the loan documents arrived and reached out to ensure he was available should we have any questions when signing the documents. My wife and I got the loan documents notarized/signed and got them overnight sent back via FedEx with the provided pre-paid packaging. On Wednesday, the loan documents were received by Trident early in the morning. One last document was needed from the Broker/Seller, which was done by the end of the business day. On Thursday morning, our loan was funded by the bank! The broker had to wait on the seller to sign off and finalize, but we were in our boat that officially became ours on Saturday!Long explanation, but if that story doesn’t speak to why you should go with Trident Funding and ask for Marty, I don’t know what will. Frustrating experience. Filled out their loan estimator info on the home page and was shown with my parameters that I would qualify for a boat loan with 4.99% (I have top tier credit). Went ahead and applied for a loan based on that and was quoted a rate of 6.74%? Would not have formally applied and had a credit inquiry on my report if I would have been presented such a high rate at first. I must say that the President of the company did reach out to me directly to apologize.

I worked with Michael Jenkins on the funding of our Beneteau sailboat and the process couldn't have been any better!
